Cutoff

Cutoff is a song I created as a representation of my own feelings, and my own perspective of memories that evolved into a sort of retrospective on memory as a whole. It’s especially emblematic of nostalgia, not only in the happy feelings and warmth that we so often seek out, but also in the eerie je ne sais quois of forgotten memories, memories that are being forgotten, and memories we wish to repress. The tone of this track is almost entirely low fidelity, with multiple instruments phasing out of tune throughout the song to give it that haunting tone that memories conjure up so effortlessly, as well as to illustrate the process of forgetting. The time signature is 6/8 to emphasize the uncanniness without altering the stereotypical formula for songs too much. As for the chord progressions, they were made up as the song progressed, so they meander on and on until the conclusion. The vocals surround the listener in a low register, with the tracks tapering off until they all return for the finale. The spoken poetry segments break the pace and represent the ways in which we remember our memories, in good and bad ways at the same time. My favorite parts are the two ad-libbed sections during the choruses.
